It’s come to my attention that vintage is the new vogue, so at long last I can claim that I’m a trendsetter. I’ve been loving vintage films for years. And it’s been a delight to discover that some of my old favorites are popping up on Netflix. I’ve been revisiting some of my old favorites and discovering a few good ones I missed out on during my childhood. (I was raised with the classiscs!)
Here’s one you should definitely see:
How to Steal a Million is a delightful little romantic comedy with a dash of suspense, a dose of fun fashion, some cool feats of engineering, and great shots of amazing vintage vehicles. (Who wants to take a ride in a sweet yellow Jaguar convertible?) The stars are Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. I guess it’s been a long time since I’ve seen Peter O’Toole in a movie, and I must say…he is a handsome devil. I love, love, love watching Audrey Hepburn on screen. She has the most expressive face, and the way she talks and moves–she could turn the worst script into a hit. Fortunately, this funny movie’s script is just fine, and the character actors in it are just as fun to watch as its stars. This is a great date-night sort of movie, with just enough feats of engineering and unexpected plot twists to keep your guy from falling asleep. Watch for the reveal of a hilarious surprise at the end of this movie.
”Well, it was pitch dark and there he was… tall, blue eyes, slim, quite good looking… A terrible man, Papa!” - Audrey Hepburn
Audrey Hepburn was such a classy actress. I read somewhere that she was very picky about the costumes she wore in her movies, and was very involved in the wardrobe selections. This movie has some very retro-cool examples of mid-century modern fashion, and Audrey’s hats are just fabulous. This is one of Kathryn’s favorites! I make her watch old movies with me all the time. She’s the only one that appreciates them, or at least wants to humor me enough to enjoy them with me! Fun post – thanks Ruth!
Oh, how fun! I can usually get Endeavor to watch them with me. I’m so happy to have a like-minded movie watcher in the family. Do you have any good suggestions for us?
